St Albans School Swimming Pool

St Albans School Swimming Pool The Board of Trustees are considering options to repair the school pool and have it operational for the community over the summer holidays and are seeking assistance from the community to help achieve this. The aim is to repair the pool to a sufficient and safe minimum standard while the Ministry of Education considers more substantial longer-term repair options. We cannot do this alone and would appreciate the support of the school community to make this happen. If you would like to help or have some specialist skills that you believe could help us achieve this goal, there is an open invitation to anyone to attend a meeting to establish the community support from 4.30pm Wednesday 29th August at the school pool. Please contact Clayton or Lincoln if you are interested or just turn up: Lincoln: bot@lincolnsell.com or ph. 021 975 900, or Clayton at clayton@greenco.co.nz or ph. 021 596 861.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with the Oak Leaf Cafe, the recent sausage sizzle, 2nd- hand uniform sales, sushi, and the Quiz Night. 3.2 Quiz night. This was very successful once again. Final profits are not yet tallied but over well over $2,000. Tracey recommended we specify ‘no BYO’ on tickets for next time, as this contravened our liquor licence. 3.3 Entertainment Books. Jane reported we have sold 222, which is comparable to last year. We still have 10 more books to sell. 3.3 Café. The new counter layout is working well. Sharon and John are training up as baristas. At Matt’s request we now have a café suggestion box. Ginnie is getting lino laid in the behind-counter area over the holidays to protect the carpet. Café profits will pay for half of this. We are now displaying classroom art in the cafe. Ginnie is happy for us to offer to make children hot chocolates to be delivered at morning tea, if they are too late in ordering in the morning – but we don’t want this to become an “option” – just an emergency back-up measure. Sarah will get quotes for scanning school archives photos so we can look at using them in the café or elsewhere in the school. 3.4 Fair. We still need to finalise the Haunted House location as there are security concerns about using the Rm 22-28 block. Teachers have until the end of term to name their class activity. Quite a few have done so already. John and Jacqui will talk to TTRR whanau about whether they could do a hangi. They are also looking at organising punga sales and fry bread. 3.5 School caps. Mandy has sourced some options ranging from $6-$13. Will get samples. Ask in newsletter to see if we can find a Christchurch supplier. 3.6 Barbecue. Nick has fixed it. Thanks Nick! 4. Please name any plates/slow cookers etc. 4.3 Rachel King's book: Rachel – a school parent and author, has offered to sell her latest book for 9-12 year olds “Red Rocks” at The Oak Leaf and will donate $5 from each sale to the PTA. 4.4 Variety letter from Liz. Forwarded to Ginnie. 4.5 Wish List: Junior class teachers have requested $200 for child-friendly tape holders and craft supplies; Glen and the School Council have asked if the PTA would fund new painted line markings (games/activities etc) on playground. They have a quote for $1967.65. We agreed to fund this out of Quiz Night profits. Motion: That we donate $2,300 to pay for painting the playground and Junior class craft supplies. Moved Jane/seconded Mandy. Passed unanimously. 4.6 Hall curtains. We will organise a working bee to take them down and clean them. AGM Chairpersons report

21 March 2012 St Albans School PTA Chairperson’s report 2012 Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all the PTA members and PTA families. It has been another tough year for the St Albans school community but once again you have had the energy to support and fundraise for our school. I cannot say enough how thankful I am as chairperson. We have had a great community year. The Oak Leaf café has had a very successful start and seeing parents in their being able to socialise and meet new people is worth as much as the profit the café is making. A big thank you to Sarah Johnston for managing the huge task of getting the Oak leaf up and running. At the beginning of this year the 2nd hand uniform shop was created in the Oak leaf giving parents greater access to uniform. Sales are up which is great, thank you Judy for administering this. Another successful quiz night held at school provided everyone with a great night out, weekend community events, the Dis-go and our very popular Market day round out a very busy 2011. Other fundraising came through sushi/pizza, 2nd hand uniform sales, calendars, entertainment books, subway and good old sausage sizzles. The PTA also supported school through working bees, lunch time duty, lost property, staff morning teas, soup, new family evenings, head boy and girl sweatshirts, PAL shirts, camp donation, ice blocks and the year 6 leaving function. Thank you Susie, Jane and Sarah our office bearers for administrating the PTA and giving up so much of your time. To the leadership team of Ginnie, Glen and Claire thank you! Thank you also to all the teachers, admin staff and Heather for your ongoing support and enthusiasm for the PTA. The PTA looks forward to another year working together. Karen Wiese, Chairperson

We will run a bar again – need to source a bar manager. Ginnie supports this. We will look at running this through the café. 4. Reports 4.1 Principal’s Report 4.2 Treasurer’s Report. (Jane) During the summer holidays $690 was spent purchasing 10 smaller trestle tables for the school through Grant and Mandy. (PTA members were emailed to approve this purchase) Motion: That we allocate $6,700 of PTA funds to our annual donation to the school (Targetted Learning, Library, sticker fund, piano accompanist, arts and sports funding, Acorn Fund) Moved Jane/seconded Wade. Passed. Motion: That we allocate an additional $800 to purchase sports uniforms as requested by Jodi. Moved Jane/seconded Wade. Passed. Motion: that we invest $10,000 of our remaining funds in a term deposit for 150 days at 4.5%. Moved Jane/Seconded Tracey. Passed. 4.3 Café Report. (Sarah) Profit: The Oak Leaf Cafe ran for 12 weeks last year from September to the end of the school year. After reimbursing the PTA the $750 in start-up funds which were lent to us in September, we cleared $1880 profit, which averages about $150 a week. So far this year sales seem to be similar. Thank-you to our PTA volunteers Susie, Tracey, Kelly and Karen who have helped out every morning taking orders and are now also selling second hand uniform. Staff: Our barista Fiona sadly will be leaving in May and we have started looking for a suitable replacement. (Please let Sarah know if you know anyone suitable) Fiona has been a big part of the success in getting the Oak Leaf up and running and has done many hours of unpaid work, on top of her paid hours. As to how to spend our profit so far, I would like to recommend we invest part of it in promoting reusable coffee cups. I have investigated an Australian brand, KeepCups, which are being sold by several Chch cafes – these are good in that they are a standard size and fit under the espresso machine heads. We can chose colours. Minimum order is a carton of 50. They are BPA free, non-toxic, polypropylene, dishwasher safe. Apart from the obvious environmental benefits of having more of our customers use reusable cups, we would also save money – each disposable cup and lid costs us around 18 cents – and we make a couple of dollars profit on each cup sold also. Motion: That we invest $500 of the Oak Leaf café’s profits so far in purchasing 50 KeepCups for resale in the café. Passed.
